F.A.Q CHIROPRACTIC
How long does the treatment take?
The first consultation takes, on average, about ¾ of an hour, and a treatment session about 15 minutes, but this will vary according to your condition and your needs.
Currently we perform the case history remotely by phone to help reduce contact times and allows us to offer advice and guidance that may be of benefit prior to your initial examination and treatment session.
How long will it take to get better?
Your recovery is dependent on many factors – the problem, the length of time you have had it and your own commitment to any rehabilitation exercises and maintenance visits which your chiropractor may recommend.
How often do I need to come for treatment?
An average course of treatments may entail five or six visits over two or three weeks, but every case is assessed individually, and it is important to keep your appointments, and make regular visits. Discuss this with your chiropractor, who will explain your treatment programme to you.
What does treatment involve?
At Chiropractic Health Centre we pride ourselves in being able to offer a wide approach of chiropractic techniques. These range from traditional thrust style (high velocity low amplitude) manipulation to SOT a gentle technique involving cranial chiropractic and fascial work. We are trained in Western Acupuncture (dry needling) and also perform massage and stretches where appropriate. What sets us apart is that we will select treatment applicable to your individual needs and discuss with you the most effective approach to your own diagnosis and individual profile.
What is the popping noise of the adjustment?
When the two surfaces of the joint are moved apart rapidly, as happens in chiropractic adjustment, there is a change of pressure within the joint space. This may sometimes cause a bubble of gas to ‘pop’ – but this sound is not significant, and does not hurt. Not all treatment involves manipulation but most patients prefer this approach as it is safe, fast and effective.
Will treatment hurt?
Manipulation, when carried out correctly by a qualified practitioner, is not painful. If you have acute muscle spasm, when even the lightest touch hurts, in which case there may be some discomfort. Sometimes, if you have had a problem for some time, you may feel sore whilst your body starts to adjust. Your chiropractor will tell you if this is likely to happen.
What is the difference between Chiropractic and Osteopathy?
There are differences in technique and approach, as well as some similarities. The important factor is that the practitioner is well-qualified. Both professions now have statutory regulation.
Is chiropractic treatment safe? Even if I’ve already had surgery?
Chiropractic is remarkably safe when treatment is carried out by a properly qualified practitioner. Your chiropractor is trained to recognise conditions which require referral elsewhere, and can treat you even after surgery.
Can I use my health insurance to cover the cost of my treatment?
Chiropractic treatment is now covered by the vast majority of private medical insurance policies. Our practitioners are registered with all the main providers. Our advice is to contact your provider to understand the terms of your individual policy (for example some companies will ask for a GP referral prior to treatment). If we can provide any further help we are always happy to answer questions.
